Self-care .. critical to spiritual health!

Self-care .. such a loaded word isn’t it?  Up until recently, I didn’t even believe that self-care was critical to my spiritual health.  We have all heard the quote “you can’t give what you don’t have” .. but do we really believe that?  Once this connection was made for me between self-care & spiritual health, taking care of myself - mind, body & soul - became something quite different.  It shifted into this deep belief that honoring my body was honoring God himself.

A scripture that I often refer to regarding self-care is Romans 12:1-2.  I recently read it in The Message (Catholic/Ecumenical Edition) that I loved.

“So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life —your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life — and place it before God as an offering.  Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him.  Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking.  Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.”

What a great reminder to place our whole life before God as an offering!  The scripture above speaks to me deeply.  Orderly Days® and the products Motherhood Press creates are meeting needs of my own.  To live in this world and not of it.  To order my days that please God.  To get back to the basics of pen & paper, being intentional, embracing my vocation, and being comfortably consistent in my specific path of duty.  As we know, that path of duty looks different to everyone.

The Monthly Intention Board (available as a download) is designed to give us a glance at our priorities for the month in God’s order.  Prayer and Self-care are placed up top for good reason .. “we can’t give what we don’t have.”   I use this page to jot down my goals for the month in each area.  For example, in Prayer I might want to attend an extra Mass each week .. this is where I write it down.  In the Friends circle I write the name of a friend I’ve been missing and make it a point to set a date!

Another download available is the Weekly Plan.  This page has many uses but what I have been using it for is self-care.  I write down how I’m going to honor my mind, body & soul each day of the week! I might not get to all 3 each day.. but by planning it out I’m being intentional!

God has been teaching me a lot about self-care.  He often speaks to me in acronyms.  Here is what I’ve learned about self-care..and my cooperation with it!

            Self-discipline

            Equips a

            Lively

            Faith

            Careful

            Attention (to self-discipline)

            Reaps

            Endurance

Lively - adj.  Active, dynamic, vibrant

Endurance - noun.  Persistent.  Ability to withstand hardship.

My prayer for all of us women is for a lively faith and endurance.  I really believe these two ingredients are a recipe for success!
